Arizona generates approximately 12 million tons of solid waste each year, with commercial and industrial waste accounting for nearly 40 percent of that total. In Pima County alone, businesses send over 1.5 million tons of material to landfills annually, much of it wood, cardboard, and other materials that could be diverted through recycling and reuse programs. The state's current landfill diversion rate hovers around 28 percent, well below the national average of 35 percent, leaving enormous room for improvement.

Tucson has set ambitious goals as part of its Tucson Resilient Together plan, targeting a 50 percent reduction in community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
