Glossary of Pallet Terms

The pallet industry has its own vocabulary. Whether you are reading a specification sheet, communicating with a supplier, or evaluating pallet options, this glossary will help you understand the terminology.

Stringer

A continuous, solid piece of lumber (typically a 2x4 or 3x4) running the length of a pallet that provides the main structural support. Stringer pallets have two or three stringers and are the most common pallet type in North America.

Block Pallet

A pallet design that uses blocks of solid wood (typically 4x4 or larger) between the top and bottom deck boards instead of stringers. Block pallets offer four-way forklift entry and are common in European markets and heavier-duty applications.

GMA Pallet

The Grocery Manufacturers Association standard pallet measuring 48 inches by 40 inches. This is the single most commonly used pallet size in North America, representing roughly one-third of all new pallets produced. Also known as the standard pallet.

CHEP

Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool, an Australian-founded company that operates the largest pallet pooling system in the world. Their distinctive blue pallets are leased rather than sold and are used by major retailers and manufacturers across over 60 countries.

EPAL / EUR Pallet

The European Pallet Association standard pallet measuring 800mm by 1200mm (approximately 31.5 x 47.3 inches). EPAL pallets are the most widely used pallet type in Europe and are recognized by a branded marking burned into the corner blocks.

Deck Board

The horizontal boards that form the top and bottom surfaces of a pallet. Top deck boards support the load directly, while bottom deck boards provide a surface for forklift tines and floor contact. Deck boards are typically 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick.

Lead Board

The outermost deck board on either end of a pallet. Lead boards bear the highest proportion of load stress during handling and are the most frequently damaged and replaced boards on a pallet.

Notch

A cutout in the bottom of a stringer pallet that allows forklift tines to enter from the side. Notched stringers enable partial four-way entry on stringer pallets, which otherwise only allow two-way entry.

Chamfer

A beveled or angled edge cut into the leading edge of deck boards. Chamfers help guide pallets into racking systems and automated conveyors by preventing the pallet from catching on equipment.

ISPM-15

International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, an international treaty requiring all solid wood packaging materials used in international trade to be heat-treated or fumigated to prevent the spread of invasive insects and pathogens. Compliant pallets are stamped with an official HT (heat treatment) mark.

Heat Treatment (HT)

The process of raising the core temperature of wood to at least 56 degrees Celsius (132.8 degrees Fahrenheit) for a minimum of 30 consecutive minutes. This is the most common method of meeting ISPM-15 requirements and is preferred over methyl bromide fumigation.

Wing

The portion of a deck board that extends beyond the outer stringer or block of a pallet. Winged pallets are used in applications where sling handling is required, as the wings provide a surface for straps or slings to grip beneath the pallet.

Pallet Pooling

A system where a third-party company owns and manages a large fleet of pallets that are leased to shippers. After use, pallets are returned to the pool operator for inspection, repair, and redistribution. CHEP and PECO are the largest pallet pooling companies in North America.

Board Feet

A unit of lumber measurement equal to a piece of wood one foot long, one foot wide, and one inch thick (144 cubic inches). Pallet lumber consumption is measured in board feet, and the pallet industry is the largest single consumer of hardwood lumber in the United States.

Four-Way Entry

A pallet design that allows forklift tines or pallet jack forks to enter from all four sides. Block pallets inherently offer four-way entry, while stringer pallets require notched stringers to achieve partial four-way access.

Stacking Load

The maximum weight a pallet can support when pallets are stacked on top of each other in a warehouse or container. Stacking load capacity is typically lower than static or dynamic load capacity because the weight is distributed through the top deck boards to the stringers.

Dynamic Load Capacity

The maximum weight a pallet can safely carry while being moved by a forklift or pallet jack. A standard GMA pallet has a dynamic load capacity of approximately 2,500 pounds. This is lower than static load capacity because the pallet flexes during movement.
