How to Choose the Right Pallet
Selecting the wrong pallet costs you money in damaged goods, wasted space, and compliance failures. Use these five factors to narrow down the right product for your operation.
1. Load Capacity Requirements
Start by determining the maximum weight your pallet will need to support. Standard recycled pallets handle 2,000–2,500 lbs in dynamic load (being moved by a forklift) and up to 5,000 lbs in static load (stationary racking). If you need higher capacities — such as for concrete, steel coils, or industrial machinery — you may need hardwood construction, thicker stringers, or block-style pallets rated for 5,000+ lbs dynamic.
2. Entry Type: 2-Way vs 4-Way
Two-way entry pallets have openings on two sides for forklift tines, while four-way entry pallets can be accessed from all four sides. If your warehouse uses narrow aisles, tight loading docks, or pallet jacks alongside forklifts, four-way entry gives your crew more flexibility. Stringer pallets are typically 2-way (unless notched), while block pallets are always 4-way.
3. New vs Recycled
For most warehousing, shipping, and storage applications, Grade A or B recycled pallets perform identically to new ones at 40–60% less cost. Choose new pallets when your industry mandates it (food-grade, pharmaceutical, clean-room) or when you need ISPM-15 certification for international export. If you are shipping one-way domestically, Grade C or D recycled pallets offer the lowest cost per shipment.
4. Size and Dimensions
The 48" x 40" GMA pallet is the North American standard and fits most racking, trucks, and containers. However, industries like telecom (42" x 42"), beverage (48" x 36"), and automotive often require different footprints. Always match your pallet size to your product dimensions, rack specifications, and trailer width to maximize cube utilization and avoid wasted space.
5. Treatment and Compliance
If your pallets will cross international borders, ISPM-15 requires heat treatment (HT) or methyl bromide fumigation and a compliance stamp. For food and pharmaceutical use, kiln-dried lumber eliminates moisture and biological contaminants. If pallets will be stored outdoors in Tucson's monsoon season, consider treated or hardwood options that resist moisture absorption and warping.
