Understanding the Pallet Grading System

The pallet grading system provides a standardized way for buyers and sellers to communicate the condition of recycled pallets without needing to inspect every unit in person. Grades range from A (the highest quality) to D (the most economical), and each grade has specific criteria related to appearance, structural integrity, and load-bearing capability.

It is important to note that while the grading system is widely used across the industry, there is no single federal standard that defines these grades. The definitions below follow the most commonly accepted criteria used by pallet recyclers and the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA). At Tucson Recycling Pallets, we apply these standards consistently so you always know exactly what you are receiving.

Grade A — Premium Recycled Pallets

Appearance

Grade A pallets look nearly new. The lumber is clean, light-colored, and free of major stains, chemical spills, or excessive markings. All boards are present and tightly fastened. There are no broken or cracked deck boards, no protruding nails, and no signs of significant weathering. Minor surface scuffs from normal single-use handling are acceptable.

Structural Quality

Every stringer (or block, depending on construction) is intact with no cracks, splits, or notch damage beyond original design specifications. All fasteners are fully seated. The pallet sits flat on a level surface with no rocking or twist. Board spacing is uniform and meets the original manufacturing specification.

Load Capacity

Grade A pallets retain their original rated load capacity — typically 2,500 lbs dynamic and 2,800 lbs static for a standard 48×40 GMA pallet. They are approved for racking applications at the full rated capacity.

Price Range

$7 – $9 per unit for standard 48×40 dimensions. Pricing varies with lumber market conditions and order volume.

Best Applications

  • Retail display where customers see the pallet
  • Food and beverage supply chains requiring clean, hygienic surfaces
  • Pharmaceutical and medical supply logistics
  • Any application where the pallet may be visible to end consumers
  • Racking systems with full load requirements

When NOT to Use Grade A

Grade A is overkill for one-way shipments, heavy industrial applications where pallets will get damaged quickly, or situations where you are shipping to a recipient who will not return the pallet. In these cases, you are paying a premium for cosmetics that provide no functional benefit.

Grade B — Standard Recycled Pallets

Appearance

Grade B pallets show clear signs of previous use. Expect moderate surface wear, darker or weathered wood, ink stamps, minor staining, and general cosmetic imperfections. Some boards may have been replaced during the recycling process, creating a mixed-wood appearance. Despite the cosmetic wear, all boards are present and the pallet is structurally complete.

Structural Quality

Stringers are intact and functional, though they may show minor surface damage such as shallow forklift scars or small end splits that do not compromise load capacity. Replaced boards are fastened securely. The pallet sits reasonably flat — a slight amount of board crown is acceptable as long as it does not affect load stability.

Load Capacity

2,200 – 2,500 lbs dynamic and 2,500 – 2,800 lbs static depending on the specific condition. Suitable for most standard racking applications.

Price Range

$5 – $7 per unit for standard 48×40 dimensions.

Best Applications

  • Warehouse-to-warehouse shipping
  • Manufacturing facilities where pallets cycle between production areas
  • Distribution centers managing high pallet volumes
  • General freight and LTL shipping

When NOT to Use Grade B

Avoid Grade B for customer-facing retail, clean-room environments, or any application with strict cosmetic requirements. If you are unsure, ask us for samples — we are happy to provide them so you can evaluate before committing to an order.

Grade C — Economy Recycled Pallets

Appearance

Grade C pallets are heavily used and show it. The wood is typically dark, weathered, and marked with multiple stamps, stains, and surface imperfections. Replaced boards are common, and the overall appearance is rough. However, these pallets have been inspected and repaired to ensure basic structural functionality.

Structural Quality

Stringers may have been repaired with companion boards or metal plates. Some deck boards may be slightly different thicknesses. The pallet is functional for its intended purpose but may have minor dimensional variations. All repairs meet minimum structural requirements — no board should be loose, and no nails should protrude.

Load Capacity

1,800 – 2,200 lbs dynamic and 2,200 – 2,500 lbs static. Not recommended for selective racking at full capacity without verification.

Price Range

$3 – $5 per unit for standard 48×40 dimensions.

Best Applications

  • One-way domestic shipping
  • Heavy industrial use (mining, construction materials, concrete products)
  • Temporary storage platforms
  • Landscaping or agricultural ground cover

When NOT to Use Grade C

Do not use Grade C pallets in automated warehouse systems (AS/RS or conveyors) where dimensional precision is critical. They are also not appropriate for racking applications where they will bear heavy loads at height. And obviously, they should not be used in food, pharmaceutical, or retail applications.

Grade D — Utility Pallets

Appearance

Grade D pallets are the most economical option and the most visually worn. These pallets may have significant cosmetic issues including heavy staining, paint residue, extensive weathering, and mismatched boards. They are functional but not pretty.

Structural Quality

Grade D pallets are structurally sound for light-duty use. They may have more extensive repairs, and overall build quality will be lower than higher grades. The pallet must still hold together under its rated load, but expect some flex, board gaps, and imperfect geometry.

Load Capacity

1,200 – 1,800 lbs dynamic and 1,500 – 2,200 lbs static. These pallets are not rated for racking.

Price Range

$1.50 – $3 per unit for standard 48×40 dimensions.

Best Applications

  • Single-use, one-way shipments of light goods
  • Floor-level storage only (no racking)
  • Banding and bundling bases
  • DIY and craft projects
  • Temporary platforms at job sites or events

When NOT to Use Grade D

Never use Grade D pallets in racking systems, for heavy loads, in automated handling systems, or in any supply chain where the pallet will be reused multiple times. The cost savings do not justify the risk of product damage or worker injury from structural failure.

How to Choose the Right Grade

The right pallet grade depends on three factors: what you are shipping, where it is going, and what happens to the pallet when it arrives. If the pallet will be seen by your customer, choose Grade A. If it stays behind the scenes in a warehouse, Grade B offers the best value. If you are shipping one-way and the recipient will discard or recycle the pallet, Grade C or D makes the most financial sense.

Many of our customers use a mix of grades across their operations — Grade A for outbound retail shipments, Grade B for internal transfers, and Grade C for inbound raw materials. This blended approach optimizes cost without compromising where quality matters.
